Molly Ayer is a closed off person. She does not enjoy opening up to people and she does not see why she would need to. She does not want to deal with people that are not chosen by her to be in her life. When Molly finds out that the only way to stay out of jail is to go and help clean out an old lady, Vivian’s, attic, she is not too thrilled about that. As Molly continuously goes to Vivian’s house and goes through her boxes, she learns about the life that Vivian used to have. Molly discovers Vivian’s old necklace and as they get to know each other, Molly learns that the necklace she found was given to Vivian from her grandmother when she lived in Ireland as a young girl. Throughout Molly’s community service hours, she grows closer to Vivian and she is able to climb out of her shell as a growing adult. Molly and Vivian learn that their lives have been somewhat similar and that allows for their relationship to grow as well as Molly’s growth in human interaction. Vivian helps Molly become a person who is not closed off as much as she was. Vivian helps her open up about her past experiences, and even though she does not want to at first, their growing relationship creates an environment where Molly is now comfortable with it. Molly’s growth as a character is mostly due to the sharing of stories between her and Vivian. Vivian’s past helps Molly understand how to deal with her own situation as a foster kid. Vivian’s personal story explains to Molly how she needs to deal with her life. The growing connection between Molly and Vivian allows for Molly to discover her potential and eventually strive reaching for it.
